SOUTH SUBURBAN HUMANE SOCIETY
The South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS) is a managed-admission shelter accepting all domestic animals, stray or owner surrender. We understand that sometimes it may be necessary to give up a pet and we will do our very best to place yours into a new home. However, shelters are places with many animals and strangers, new routines, and can be a bit stressful to animals that are accustomed to being in a home environment.
Shelters should be used as a last resort.
If you have found a stray animal, please contact animal control for the town/city you have found the animal in. Chances are if someone is looking for that pet, they will start with their local animal control. If you are unable to contact animal control or there isn’t an animal control for that area, SSHS is here to help.
Giving Up Your Pet
In the event that the resources that SSHS has provided don’t work out for you, we are here to help.
The SSHS admissions center is open BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
DO NOT ABANDON YOUR PET. This is a felony and our security cameras will see you and you will be prosecuted.
Please call (708) 755-PETS ext 500 to schedule an appointment. Please note, we are constantly operating at or near capacity but will do our best to assist you. We will conduct a short interview over the phone to determine if your pet is a candidate for our adoption program. If your pet is a candidate, we will schedule an appointment or add you to our waitlist. If you are approved for an appointment to surrender your pet, we ask you bring the pet either in an approved carrier or have the pet on a leash, bring any previous vet records and ownership records.
Will my pet get adopted?
To be placed up for adoption, your pet must pass a health evaluation and a behavior assessment. If both are passed, your pet will be placed up for adoption and will stay available for adoption until a new home is found provided your pet remains healthy both medically and behaviorally. We do not place time limits or an expiration date on an animal’s time with us.
Unfortunately not all animals are considered adoptable. Some animals may be disqualified at intake from being placed up for adoption by obvious signs of disease or those that display severe aggression at intake. We will try to disclose this information with you at the time of intake to allow you to make a decision on the outcome of your pet before you relinquish ownership to SSHS.
It is important to keep in mind, the shelter environment is stressful and your pet may react quite differently than they have in a home environment and we strongly recommend using the resources listed above.
Re-homing Your Pet
For pet owners who can’t keep their pets, they can use the quick pet upload form on the below web address through adoptapet.com. Relinquishers can quickly create a pet profile for their pet filled with info on the pet’s personality, ideal living situation, and photos. They can even upload medical records to later be transferred to the new adopter. Once approved, pets appear alongside the hundreds of thousands of adoptable pets on Adopt-a-Pet.com.
